Practicing Obstetrics in States with Abortion Regulations: What Clinicians Need to Know
Since the Dobbs decision changed the landscape of state laws regarding abortion, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage management, and treatment of other pregnancy complications have been conflated with induced abortions. Because of this and a lack of clear guidance from many medical organizations, physicians are confused and even afraid to provide life-saving care to women in difficult situations. This course features a board-certified Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and an attorney with expertise in state abortion statutes who both explain the legal precedent for state laws as well as what does and does not constitute an induced abortion that would be prevented by some laws.
Reversal of Mifepristone with Progesterone: A Review of the Evidence
The regimen for drug-induced abortion, mifepristone followed by misoprostol, is used for approximately two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. As the incidence of these abortions has increased, so has the number of women who regret their abortion decision after starting them and desire to know whether or not they can save their pregnancy. Since 2006, a growing number of medical professionals have provided natural progesterone to reverse the effects of mifepristone in women who have started a drug-induced abortion but have not yet taken misoprostol – giving their patients a second chance at choice. The efficacy and safety of mifepristone reversal with progesterone has been hotly debated with opponents claiming that it is unproven and unsafe. This course does a thorough review of the medical literature on this subject as well as features patient stories of two women who delivered babies after using this protocol.
